Rev. Dr. Eugene Johnson was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and was reared in the suburban community of Oakville, Louisiana. He currently resides in Centreville, Virginia.Dr. Johnson is no stranger to the Christian walk of life for he was religiously educated in the faith and fellowship of the Gospel in a Christian home. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother worked avidly for the causes of Christ.
Dr. Johnson assumed the leadership of the Mount Olive Baptist Church in November 1992. Under the divine will of God and Dr. Johnson's leadership, Mount Olive has experienced unprecedented growth. In addition to experiencing unprecedented growth in size, from 250 to more than 2,000 members on roll, the church has received an overwhelming number of men and women who have experienced Christian conversion and have matured in the devotion of their lives to Christ. He has carried out a unique ministry that has not only attracted the youth, but has drawn many men to the church. Through its ministries, the church has become very family oriented. It has become one of the fastest growing churches in Fairfax County.
Dr. Johnson has instituted a unique Christian Discipleship Ministry that focuses on Building Individuals Spiritually for God’s Service. Through this ministry, individuals’ spiritual maturity, spiritual gifts and spiritual services are accentuated as they develop to be used as instruments for God’s service. He has also established partnership relationships with the local schools to foster the academic achievement of minority students.
He is an active supporter and participant in foreign mission programs and has personally traveled to Africa to participate in evangelistic crusades. Under the leadership of Dr. Johnson, Mount Olive has extended its Christian witness and missions outreach activities to seven continents.
Dr. Johnson's academic preparation encompasses the completion of his primary and secondary education in the Louisiana public school system. He attended and completed his advanced academic studies at Southern University, Baton Rouge, LA where he received a Bachelors of Architecture Degree in June 1970. His seminary study was completed at the Howard University School of Divinity where he earned a Masters of Divinity Degree in 1989. He was conferred the prestigious Honorary Doctors of Divinity Degree for his exemplary leadership and service by the Richmond Virginia Seminary in October 2006.
Before assuming his full time pastoral status at Mount Olive, Dr. Johnson's served as the national expert in the field of design, art and architecture and was the principle Resident Architect with the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. Upon completion of his career Dr. Johnson was credited as being the first African American in many of the agencies' national accomplishments. He has been recognized for his effort in spearheading the recognition of the Selma to Montgomery highway route as an All-American Road for the historic Voting Rights March. He was also instrumental in the design and placement of interpretive facilities along the route to serve as a visual and perpetual legacy for the Voting Rights March.
Dr. Johnson is actively involved in religious, civic, and academic organizations. Most notably, he serves as the Moderator of the Northern Virginia Baptist Association from 2006-2011, the association comprises over 100 churches. He is a leader in the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention where he serves as the Secretary of the Executive Board and Executive Committee.
Besides the work of God, Dr. Johnson prides his life most on the love of his family. He is married to the former June L. Lambert of Harvey, LA. They have been blessed with two sons, Brian and Kevin and are the proud Grandparents of Marley and Jadin.
